Myths about Counselling
Myth Counselling is only for people who are mentally ill.
Fact Many people who come to counsellors are bright, intelligent and stable. They are often just everyday people who might be faced with a problem and are looking for self-development. We all face challenges at some point and counselling can provide assistance with the aim of lasting change. In fact seeking assistance is a sign of self-awareness, intelligence and desire for a better life.
Myth. Everyone will know I am seeing a counsellor.
Fact Counsellors are bound by professional ethics to enable us to protect your privacy and confidentiality. (There are only a few extreme situations where a counsellor is able to release your details e.g if someone is posing an imminent danger to themselves or others)
Myth A relationship must be close to divorce before they see a counsellor.
Fact It is never too early nor too late to see a counsellor. Many problems should be addressed earlier in a relationship to avoid years of suffering. We recommend seeing a counsellor as early as possible. Even if you are at the stage of divorcing or separating, counselling can be useful to clear the way for a new beginning. It may also help dealing with anger, guilt and stress. Even good relationships can benefit from counselling. Counselling can help ignite or reignite the passion in any relationship.
Myth Both partners are required to attend counselling to solve relationship problems.
Fact It is possible to address problems with only one member of the relationship. On other occasions having both members of the relationship present at the counselling sessions may be helpful but not essential. Each case is different, even if one partner is not willing to attend the sessions, it is still possible to achieve lasting change. At the very least, counselling will help the attending partner feel happier about the situation. They are often able to positively influence the relationship, even without talking about the process, to the non- attending partner.
Myth A counsellor cannot help me as they don't know me.
Fact This is one of the advantages seeing a counsellor. Friends and family may want to give advice but they are rarely unbiased. A counsellor on the other-hand has been trained to assist and is also approaching your issues from a totally unbiased view point. Clients will often come in with a problem and then discover other contributing factors. At Shanti counselling we don't want you to spend months and months exploring your past.
Myth I've been to other counsellors and psychologists and they didn't help. It is going to be the same this time.
