MYTHS ABOUT HYPNOTHERAPY
There are many misconceptions surrounding hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Below are six most common myths.
Myth: Hypnotherapy = Mind control
Fact: A person undergoing hypnosis is participating by choice and is fully in control of themselves. They have the ability to take themselves out of the hypnotic state if they choose to by simply opening their eyes. A hypnotherapist cannot make someone do anything that would go against their core values. The client will hear the hypnotherapist but the mind may drift
as it does usually in every-day life.
Myth: Hypnotherapy can make people do silly things
Fact: A hypnotherapist can't make you do anything against your will. Stage hypnotists will invite volunteers from the audience to get up on stage but they are"'willing" participants' who understand the nature of such shows and know that they will be entertaining the audience by doing amusing things. The people participating in these shows are normally very extroverted
and willing participants.
Myth: In hypnosis I may reveal my deepest darkest secrets
Fact: You will only reveal information that you want to disclose. Catching criminals would be easy if this was true and there would be no need for a trial!
Myth: l might never wake up
Fact: Hypnosis is a calm and relaxed state, so sometimes a client might enjoy being in this pleasant state Sometimes the therapist may need to encourage the client to open their eyes and 'return to the room'. In time a client will naturally return to a fully awake state.
Myth: Only gullible people can be hypnotised
Fact: Some people are more 'suggestible' in hypnosis than others, People who have a good imagination are often especially open to suggestion. It is however difficult to predict who will be most 'suggestible' and a lot depends on client/therapist relationship and the chosen hypnosis methods used. We normally find that any-one willing to engage with the therapist can gain some benefit. Most people come out of hypnosis feeling relaxed and awake and feeling good about the experience. There is nothing to be worried about.
Myth: I won't hear what is said to me during hypnosis
Fact: Everyone's experience is different and it is natural for your mind to wander whilst in hypnosis. You may recall some or none of what has been said as a result of mind being distracted.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotic trance has been described as a state of focused attention Have you ever tried asking some one a question when they are engrossed watching TV or on a computer and received no response.? Then you have experienced trance ... a naturally occurring state. Hypnotherapy is simply guiding you to a natural state without trying. As no-one can hypnotize you without your consent, it is often said by therapists that all hypnosis is self hypnosis.
The process itself aims to alter the state of consciousness in a way that relaxes the conscious part of the mind whilst simultaneously stimulating and focusing the subconscious part. This heightened state of awareness allows the therapist to guide the client to self realisation with the aim of creating lasting change.
